Job Overview: 

GaN is seeking an Optical Engineer to support our growing team in Huntsville, Al. The position will include work involving electro-optics and infrared sensor analysis, lasers, ultraviolet sensors, and radio-frequency sensors.


  • Operate various pieces of test and support equipment to include power supplies, multi-meters, video cameras and data acquisition systems used in testing military weapon systems
  • Assemble and/or install equipment or parts requiring complex wiring, soldering or connecting cable harnesses.
  • Troubleshoot both mechanical, electrical power, and electrical control systems
  • Determine the performance, capabilities, limitations, and problems associated with optical and electro-optical sensors, new and emerging optical, laser, SAR, acoustic, hyper-spectral, and infrared technologies systems.
  • Develop requirements, procedures, and unique test methods for new and emerging sensor technologies
  • Take ownership and support optical testing in lab and field environments
  • Develop and implement field tests through planning, execution, and reporting
  • Support the creation and approval of work procedures and SOP documentation as needed
  • Create daily activity logs and pre-test safety documentation to ensure quality and safety procedures
  • Perform checks/verifications of test plans and procedures
  • Provide status updates regularly
  • Write and edit technical test documentation such as test plans and reports.
  • Work from schematics and verbal direction and execute test operations while ensuring all activities are done in compliance with safety guidelines
  • Participate in on-the-job-training (OJT) program associated with operation of test specific equipment and tasks
  • Support equipment inventory and maintenance


Requirements (minimum): 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 6 years of experience; or a master’s degree in Engineering and 4 years of experience; or a PhD in Engineering and 2 years of experience
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Class I and/or II explosive certification
  • Willing and able to work outdoors up to 60% of the time regardless of weather conditions, to include hot/humid conditions, cold conditions, heights, and around ammunition and explosives
  • Both mechanically as well as electrically inclined
  • Possess basic computer skills, to include the ability to use Microsoft Office
  • Able to prepare informal test reports
  • Required to follow and adhere to all safety and quality procedures, policies, and regulations to complete task



Desired Skills: 

  • Prefer previous experience in a lab and field environment researching and/or testing different military weapons system, optical and sensor types
  • Active Secret Security Clearance preferred



Special Requirements: 

  • Must be a U.S. citizen. 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
